The overlap should only be the 3/4" as noted. The buttons underneath will be close to the edge and will not show. I hope that helps! In the picture above the edges are lined up with the notches, which makes is seem off for sewing buttons on the edge underneath. When I read the directions from the pattern, it reads: overlap the front edges of the Front Bodice 3/4", aligning the notches at the bottom, to me that means you match up the notches with each other (which also give more space for sewing on buttons), not the edges.
