All Shook Up

Mm mm mm, oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

Our bed was shaking, rattling and rolling around 4:30 a.m. today... and NOOOOO! It's not what you think! Get your minds out of the gutter. Sheesh!

We had a 5.2 magnitude earthquake... the first I had felt since we moved to the States from Costa Rica when I was 16!! I thought I had escaped all natural disasters of the earth shattering kind. eeeek!

This one wasn't so bad and as a matter of fact Sophie & Sydney slept right through it. I am the lightest sleeper on the face of the earth so at the first sign of shaking I was literally on my feet screaming "WTH was that?!?" Jon woke up for a split second, checked his watch and said "probably just a plane flying really low" and went back to sleep. I walked around the house for a couple of minutes trying to figure out what had just happened. It's been 20 years since I felt that sensation!!

Eventually I went back to bed and when I woke back up a couple of hours later and checked my email I learned the truth from none other than my soon-to-be "coworker," the fabulous and talented Paula Prass. She sent an email telling me about her eventful morning with the earthquake and I knew that she didn't live too far away from me, so I checked out the news and it was one of those "AHA!" moments!

According to reports, this is the second strongest earthquake that has shaken this region of the country. The strongest being in 1968, so most of the people around here have never felt one this strong. And I could tell... everywhere I went today, people were gathered in groups sharing stories. LOL! And the funniest thing is that everyone's stories were pretty much identical: the wives all said that they got up and checked on the kids and turned on the news while their husbands went back to sleep in total disbelief or apathy. hmmmm. Men!

  1. We felt the earthquake all the way down here in Nashville! I woke up out of a sound, deep sleep to the sound of everything in the house rattling and my first thought was TORNADO! (they are rampant here, lol). In my brief moment of panic I woke my husband up & told him to grab Cassidy & get her downstairs and that I would get Kendall. Of course he gets up looks at me and then peeks through the blinds & says, "the wind isn't even blowing" and goes back to bed. So of course I went back to bed since it was 4:30 and I had 2 more good hours of sleep left! The girls slept through it all too. Anyhoo! What a way to start the day. Glad to hear all is well u p your way, I know you are much closer than I am.

  3. WOW, Dana! You all felt it in Tennessee??? Weird! Yup, I just heard reports that it was felt as far down as Northern FL. HA! Oh, and my friend Eva, who lives in Cincinnati, said they felt it too.

Lovelyn... how funny that you guys slept right through it. You must be some heavy sleepers! It jolted me out of the bed! LOL!!

Isn't it a weird sensation? We had a 5.4 over here - in the UK of all places - about two months ago. The kids slept through it but we both sat bolt upright in bed, and I had to get up and make a cup of tea afterwards. The epicentre was only twenty miles from us so it felt strong at the time, but now I can hardly remember it, sadly.

  6. Kim, thanks for visiting. WOW! 20 miles from the epicentre is pretty close. I'd bet you were pretty startled!

Jenn, my sister lives in Ballwin, MO and she said they all felt it pretty strongly.

  8. We slept through it here but Emma woke up around 4:30 AM that morning and came running in our room saying "mama mama mama" so I think she must have felt it! It shook my parents house pretty good in central Indiana! I'm glad everything is ok for you all up there. :)

  9. Kristen.. LOL!! I was wondering why no one had caught that little "coworker" mention. Leave it to you, huh?!? LOL!!! I'll be spilling the beans soon... but as you may have figured out already it has to do with the "fabric design" thing that I have been hinting about lately. :)

Amber... how funny that Emma felt it and you guys didn't.
