13 Days of Modkid Halloween // Day 8

Friday, October 24, 2014

When we first announced the "13 Days of Modkid Halloween", I showed you my youngest daughter's clown costume created with the Modkid Bailey. Today, I'm bringing you another member of our circus in the form of a tight rope walker (or "type" rope walker as she keeps saying).

I created with top using the Modkid Ava pattern. I modified the bodice to include a corset style feature.

In case you would like to recreate this look, I've got a little tutorial to show you my process. It's a fun little pattern flip weather it's for a costume or not. You'll need the Ava Pattern to begin.

First, cut the bodice pattern piece 1/2" wider at the fold.

Next, mark two parallel lines 5/8" apart. The first line is 1 7/8" from the fold. Repeat for the opposite side of the fold.

It's super hard to see in the above photo, but add 1 1/2" interfacing strips on the wrong side of the bodice where you drew the parallel lines.

Press the bodice to the front right sides together at the line closest to the fold.

 '
Press the bodice to the back wrong sides together at the outside line creating a pleat. Repeat for the opposite side of the fold.

Mark eyelet locations centered in the pleat. The eyelets should be about 1 1/2" apart and 1" from the top and bottom edge. Your spacing may vary depending on the size you are making.

Insert the eyelets at the markings. I used one of my favorite scrapbooking tools, called a Crop-A-Dile.

Finally, baste the folds in place at the top and bottom seams and continue with the remaining pattern instructions for the Ava Top. When your top is complete, thread a shoelace or ribbon through the eyelets. Done!

Keep sharing your Modkid Halloween creations!!

Hello From Courtney!

Thursday, July 03, 2014

Hello my fellow Modkid fans! Patty gave me such a great welcome at the beginning of the week, and now I’m here tell you how excited I am to be part of the Modkid team! Way before I was pattern testing for Patty, I was sewing Modkid patterns. And I just can’t stop! Thankfully, my photo skills have improved a tad since the time of some of these outfits. These Ava tops are near and dear to my heart since I made them for my now 6 year old and they've been passed down to my 2 year old.

I couldn’t wait for the release of the Modkid Style book, and this is one of many items I’ve sewn from it.

Fast forward a bit closer to the present, and I have to let you know that I rarely only sew a Modkid pattern for testing. They are just too good and demand to be lived in, played with, and worn for fun! You saw several of my tester photos in Patty’s post, but here are a few that came after the fact. This is the Bailey Romper.

When I pattern tested the Zoey Summer Ensemble, I sewed it for my two year old. Well, big sis certainly needed one too.

I always try to mix things up a bit, a tendency I hope to bring to some of my Modkid posts to show different ways to take a Modkid pattern even further. Here I added a pintuck detail to the Hailey Girls Top.

Finally, I couldn’t leave you without something new, so I used the super speedy Malibu Cross-back dress pattern for a little 4th of July fun.

I just love this back!! And, with the aid of Fold Over Elastic for the binding, it all came together in no time.

Now, for a few random things about me just so we’re all comfortable here:
  • I’m a Texan at heart transplanted to the South. (No, Texas isn’t considered part of The South)
  • Cop shows have always been my favorite, and now I’m married to one.
  • My favorite color is purple.
  • As you may have guessed, I love dessert especially cupcakes.
  • I can’t spell. Thankful for spell check!
Hopefully, we’ll all have a chance to get to know each other better through this awesome sewing community. We’re chatting away on the new Facebook Group, so come join us!
Outtakes

There's never a dull moment when I do photoshoots with Sydney. Like any typical 4-year old, she's all over the place. Yesterday's shoot was no exception. I got some amazingly good shots (which I will reveal later with the pattern info) but the outtakes were so funny I couldn't resist sharing some of them...

Many photos did make the cut and the chosen cover shot is so awesome it actually makes me teary eyed. I'll share soon! Promise!

And speaking of sharing soon... the studio redux is about 98% complete. Jon built me a new tabletop for my cutting table and I've been busy putting the little finishing touches in every last corner and empty wall space. Stay tuned for the full reveal in a couple of days...

In the meantime you may want to check out this site and bookmark it for future reference. During the months of August and September they will be featuring a baker's dozen tutorials of awesome projects made with Andalucia.
