Free Yoga Skirt Tutorial

Thursday, February 25, 2016

We are bringing home a tutorial for these sweet and comfy yoga skirts! Hopefully they will become a wardrobe staple at your house. They are easy to make, fun to wear and a great way to achieve that “Just Like Me” look for moms and daughters or big and little sisters. I have made these in any size from toddler to adult since there are no pattern pieces, just a quick and easy formula to follow… So come sew along with me and use up those awesome knit fabrics you’ve been waiting to sew with!
Suggested Fabrics: Use stretch knits only: cotton interlock, jerseys, matte jerseys, lightweight double knits, stretch velvet or stretch lace, 54” to 58” wide. For the waistband, you can use rib knits or any stretch fabric that has about a 50% stretch. See note at the end for a variation on this skirt using woven cottons.
ALL SEAM AND HEM ALLOWANCES ARE 1/2”
The first thing to do is to determine your measurements. Use Figure 1 to determine your waist and skirt length. Using a tape measure, measure all around your waist (or the skirt recipient’s waist) and that number will be Measurement A. Next, measure from the hip area (just below the waist) to wherever you want the hem of the skirt to fall (mid-thigh, knee, below-the-knee, etc.) and that number will be Measurement B.
Next, using measurements A & B, we will determine the size of your skirt pattern pieces.
For the double-folded yoga waistband, take Measurement A, subtract 3 inches and divide this number by 2 to get the width of each of your 2 non-elastic waistband pieces (we make these pieces much narrower than the actual waist size because there is no elastic, so the band needs to be taut in order to hold up the weight of the skirt.) The height of each panel will be 15” for any size skirt. After all the pieces are sewn together, this will result in a 7″ band that can then be folded down in half to 3.5″, which is a perfect and comfy yoga band for all ages.
For example: My daughter’s waist measures 21” all around. So, 21” – 3” = 18” / 2 = 9”. I will cut 2 waistband panels at 9” wide by 15” tall with the maximum stretch of the fabric running across the 9” width. See Figure 2.
For the twirly skirt panel, we will take Measurement B and add 1 inch to it (1/2” for the seam allowance at the waist and another 1/2” for the hem allowance.) I normally cut my skirt panel the full width of the knit fabric for all skirt sizes… this results in a super full and twirly skirt for the little girls and a less-full, more fitted look for me. Adjust the width of this panel according to your preferred amount of fullness.
For example: My daughter likes her skirts to fall right above the knee. Her B measurement was 12”. So, 12” + 1” = 13”. I will cut her skirt panel at 13” high by the full width of the knit fabric, with the maximum stretch going widthwise. See Figure 3.
The last thing I do before sewing up my yoga skirt is to divide my skirt panel in two, widthwise. I do this because I prefer the look of two side seams on my skirts instead of one in the back. If you would rather have one skirt panel that seams in the back, you can certainly skip this step.
Now it’s time to assemble your yoga skirt.
1. Create the waistband. Place one waistband piece over the other, right sides together, and stitch or serge along both side edges (the 15” sides) with a 1/2” seam allowance, thus creating a fabric circle,Figure 4.
Then fold the waistband down in half, wrong sides together and press, creating a finished folded edge and two raw edges, as shown in Figure 5. Both side seams will be encased within the band, which is now exactly 7.5” high and about 4” narrower than your waist measurement. Set the waistband aside until we are ready to attach it to the skirt.
2. Create the skirt panels next. Lay one skirt panel over the other, right sides together and stitch or serge along both side edges with a 1/2” seam allowance, thus creating a fabric circle, Figure 6. Turn the skirt right sides out. Note: if you’ve chosen to use only 1 panel that seams in the back, then stitch or serge this back seam and turn skirt right side out.
3. Hem the lower edge of the yoga skirt using your preferred method. There are many ways to hem knits. My preferred methods include using a coverstitch machine for a more professional finish, or a lettuce-edge rolled hem on my overlock serger for a whimsical, fun look or simply by pressing up a 1/2” hem and running a zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine for a funky, home-made look. Be sure to check out our Hemming Knits Tips and Tricks post.
4. Gather the top edge of your skirt. Use your longest machine stitch and sew two rows of gathering stitches along the top raw edge of the skirt panel: one row 1/8” from the edge and the second row 1/4” from the edge. Don’t backstitch at the end! You want those threads loose so you can pull and gather. Grab both bobbin threads and carefully pull to gather the top edges of your skirt, distributing gathers evenly with your fingers. Gather the fabric until the skirt’s top edge is the same width as the waistband you created in step 1,Figure 7.
Note: If you have another preferred gathering method, like using a ruffler foot or your serger, you can do that instead. We have a wonderful Gathering Tips & Tricks post to check out.
6. Attach waistband to skirt. Lay your waistband over the right side of the yoga skirt’s top gathered edge aligning side seams and keeping raw edges even. Pin in place all around, adjusting the skirt’s gathered edge to fit. Stitch or serge 1/2” from raw edges, Figure 8. Turn the waistband right side out and your MODKID Yoga Skirt is finished!
We usually wear our skirts so that the gathered area sits right above the hips and we fold the waistband down, to create that “double-fold yoga band” as you see above. Pregnant women can wear the full waistband panel stretched over their bellies for a super snugly and comfy fit.
Variation: You can make this skirt using a woven fabric like a quilting cotton, cotton lawn or voile for the main skirt panel, as long as you still use a stretch fabric for the double-folded waistband. The cutting and assembly instructions are the same, just keep in mind that quilting cottons are usually only 44” wide (not 58” like most knit fabrics) so the skirt will be less full and twirly. If you still seek maximum fullness, you can cut two full-width panels and assemble as directed. HAVE FUN!
Note: If you do decide to make the main skirt panel out of a woven fabric, it is helpful to gather the skirt a little wider than your waist (maybe even as wide as your hips) and then stretch the raw edges of your knit waistband to fit the gathered edge of the skirt when you attach it.
Regardless, it’s always a good idea to trim the gathered edge (or at least remove the gathering stitches with a seam ripper) before you wear it so that the skirt will have maximum stretch.
Always remember to use a stretch stitch or zig-zag stitch on your machine when sewing stretch garments if you don’t have a serger, to avoid broken stitches when the garment stretches over the body.

Baby Lock's Holiday Project Round-Up 2013

It's not too early to start planning Holiday gifts and décor, right? As part of our partnership with Baby Lock, we get to design fun little projects from time to time to share with their readers. Last year, we did a free pattern for some adorable Elf Stockings. This year, we are thrilled to participate in their Holiday Happenings once again, and this time, we've designed a sweet Holiday Tree Pillow that can be made a couple different ways. Check it out:

Above pillows were sewn with my Rendezvous collection, for Jo-Ann Fabrics.

In order to download the FREE pattern, visit the Baby Lock website and click on the Holiday Gift Guide, HERE or HERE. Scroll to page 20 and, in the bottom right corner (next to the tree pillow picture), you'll see a green button that says, PROJECT. Click on that button and the pattern will automatically pop up on your screen! Now all you'll have to do is print it out or download it for future use. It's as easy as that!

Then don't forget to check out the other amazing projects sent in by my fellow Baby Lock contributors. You can probably make all of your Holiday gifts just from these free patterns! :)

Happy Holidays, friends!!
Introducing: Rendezvous
My newest line of premium quilting cottons, designed exclusively for Jo-Ann Fabrics

Fabric aficionados, I have a big surprise for you! I was going to wait until Labor Day weekend to reveal my BIG NEWS, but a little birdie told me that the cat was out of the bag and running around all over Instagram, so I had to speed up my announcement. ;)

I am super excited to tell you guys about my newest premium quilting fabric collection, Rendezvous, available exclusively at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores® nationwide. The collection is already available in stores and online!

Rendezvous was inspired by the Art Deco movement emanating from Paris in the 1920s.
It’s the Roaring Twenties, a decadent time for music, fashion, travel... and romance. The color palette is vibrant and retro juxtaposed against a soft cream ground, and the designs have a patina effect to evoke a nostalgic feel.
As you can probably tell already, these are all new designs and completely different from those carried exclusively in independent quilt shops. My Jo-Ann Fabrics exclusive collections will allow us to get our quality fabrics into the hands of those quilters and sewists who don't have easy access to our wonderful independent quilt shops.

And there's more! In addition to the new fabric line, we've also designed a couple of fun projects to get you started. These are FREE from us to you and are available now on the Jo-Ann website.

There is the POPPIES APRON, featuring my Vintage Poppies Red fabric, and the CATHEDRAL WINDOWS PILLOW, featuring my Cathedral Windows fabric.

If you live in the Central Illinois area, don't miss my appearance on Saturday, September 28th from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Bloomington Jo-Ann store. I would love to see you there! Below is the flyer for it:

The first 17 people to come by and see me on the 28th will receive a FREE copy of Generation Q magazine (the issue that features my studio!), compliments of my friends at GenQ!
Stop The Presses!

To commemorate the release of my newest fabric collection, Just My Type, I have designed this easy-to-sew geometric quilt that uses every print in the collection. And best of all... it's FREE!
You can download this quilt pattern from:
  • You Can Make This
  • Craftsy
  • Etsy (although Etsy wouldn't let me list it for less that $0.20 so you're better off getting it from one of the other two places).

This quilt was designed to use the Just My Type pre-cut bundles...

Charm Packs:

and Fat Quarter Bundles:
Plus some extra yardage for sashing, backing and binding. All the fabric requirements are clearly listed in the pattern listing, so you can know in advance how much you will need to buy for this quilt.

If you are looking for Just My Type fabric, I know it just started shipping last week, so it might not be readily available everywhere, but a quick Google search reveals it is in stock at Hawthorne Threads, Fat Quarter Shop, FabricWorm, and all over Etsy. (Retailers: if you have Just My Type in stock, please leave your link in the comments and I will add you to the list).

Here are a couple more pics of the quilt to whet your appetite.

Happy sewing!!
Sunny Days Tank
A free pattern and video tutorial for Baby Lock

Yes, I know! With temps being in the arctic range in most of the country right now, it is difficult to visualize "Sunny Days", but I promise those days coming and when they do, you'll be ready to celebrate with this adorable tank I designed for Baby Lock.
Fabric shown is Mod Tulip from the Heaven & Helsinki knit fabric collection by Patty Young for Michael Miller Fabrics.

This easy-to-sew top uses two of my favorite sewing techniques, lettuce-edge rolled hems and shirring, which always add lots of pizzazz and flair to any garment! Even if you've never done these techniques before, you'll be able to master them in no time with our detailed instructions and companion video tutorial.

You can download the free instructions for this tank by going to the Baby Lock website and scrolling halfway down the page to the section, "We're on a Serge & Rescue Mission". There, you will find the pattern download link and the video tutorial link, which I've also embedded for you guys below.

When the folks at Baby Lock asked me if I'd like to participate in their blog round-up of “Snappy Holiday Projects.”, I was thrilled and flattered. They said it should be something that will fulfill that “OMG I need to come up with something fast!” feeling we all get during the holiday crunch, and I knew exactly what I was going to design! This whimsical Elf Stocking has been in the back of my mind since last year, but I never had a chance to sew it up. Now, I had the push to get it done. And now you can too with this FREE pattern you can download off the Baby Lock site. Just check out all the amazing projects you can make from these talented blogger friends!! Just like our adorable Owl Stuffie Pattern we featured last week, this one comes as an 8-page downloadable PDF document. Print it at 100% (no scaling) right to your desktop printer. No need to enlarge the pattern... it has been tiled so all you have to do is print, cut, tape and sew! Step-by-step sewing instructions, detailed diagrams and photos are also included in true MODKID fashion.

Here's another close-up of the stocking. We sewed miniature jingle bells to the points of the cuff and curly toe, but you could add anything from your stash... pom-poms, buttons, ribbons, whatever your heart desires! These are perfect for using my new Textured Basics fabrics (shipping this week!)

I'm feeling extremely thankful right now and want to share some Holiday cheer with you all. Right before I left, I got a little surprise in the mail... my comp copies of the latest issue of QUILT Magazine featuring a complete pattern & instructions of my Playdate Quilt. Yes, this picture was taken on our hotel bed... sorry, that's the best I could do on such short notice...haha

quilt-magazine-shot

You have no idea how many email inquiries I have gotten for this pattern ever since I showed the quilt at the Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis and for months now I've been saying "Soon, soon, it's coming soon!" but not really knowing when. Well, it's here now! YIPPEEE! Here is what the cover looks like and you can pick it up at most bookstores and news stands right now.

QUILT Mag-issue#120

The best part is... you can actually purchase a full quilt kit for this quilt and make it in a weekend for your favorite kid. The article says that the kits are available at Fat Quarter Shop but I was just notified that they were so popular that they sold out right away. WOW! Luckily, my good friends at Quilt Home have picked up the ball and are offering the quilt kit at limited quantities, so go on and get yours HERE before it's gone.

In case you need a reminder of what the quilt looks like, here ya go...

I'm in the mood for... gift-giving!!!

Sanctuary
is hitting the stores this week so I have prepared a few goodies for you all in celebration of its arrival. Here's a bad iPhone pic of me standing next to a freshly delivered stack of Sanctuary at my local über cool designer fabric store, Sew Much More. It was such great timing... I got there literally 5 minutes before the UPS man showed up with these!

But, first, believe it or not, we had THREE NO SHOWS, on the Quiltmaker 100 Blocks contest, so, as they say, you snooze, you loose! We've selected 3 new winners and this time we have a way to contact them... you learn something new every day, right?! So, congratulations to the new winners... I guess it was meant to be, ladies!

Ok I've probably entered every drawing you've had in the last year and nothing. I love the block and the fabrics, it would be so fun to win since I'm getting ready to embark on trying to make a quilt for my chickies, I'm not so optimistic but I know they will like it no matter what, for a while anyway ;) Would be so nice to learn some techniques and get started with that fabulous fabric!

OMG...a new magazine and new fabrics?!? I would think I'd died and gone to heaven! Surely that is what heaven will be! Love the block and expecially love the envelope enclosure on your pillows!

Beautiful pillow. Love Flora collection and this color is energizing, great!!!
Would love to win a copy and of course a fabric lot by you :D

TaniLove will receive the magazine AND fabric bundle. The two other winners will receive a copy of the magazine. Please contact us at info@modkidboutique.com with your mailing address and if not... I'm tracking you down! haha

Sooo... back to the Sanctuary freebies. Valerie Haberer, owner of Sew Much More, had come up with this fabulous idea of doing fabric bolt tags with the designer's logo (or that of the actual fabric collection) so her customers could easily identify them, so I brought her these cool Sanctuary tags to put on her bolts (again... bad iPhone pic).

sanctuary at sew much more2

I also brought her some generic Patty Young Designs tags to put onto all her other PY bolts since I didn't have a lot of time to make these up for every collection... plus at the time I didn't know what all she had still in stock, etc. But aren't these fun?!

f&f at sew much more2

So... I thought since these were so well-received, I'd share the wealth with all my lovely shop owners out there since you are all so sweet and supportive. I've laid these tags 10-up on a 8.5" x 11" sheet with crop marks, so they are ready to print & cut. I printed mine onto card stock so they would be more durable and cut them out using an X-Acto knife and self-healing mat, but you can easily cut these out with scissors.

For a high-res PDF download click HERE for the Sanctuary tags and HERE for the Patty Young tags. Or...click on the thumbnails below to go directly to the Flickr image in JPG format.

Here's an idea for online shops: print these out onto label sheets, cut them out and use them as stickers to place on fabric packages before you ship them out to your customers.... ding, ding, ding... GENIUS! (and cute!) ;)

I haven't forgotten about all my lovely fans out there.. I wanted to share some great gift-giving ideas for the Holidays, and one of my favorite things to make... PILLOWS!! These pillows were among the most photographed items in my booth this past Quilt Market, so I'll walk you through how to make these quick & easy gifts for your family & friends.

Fall-Quilt-Market-2010-46

First off, the Dahlia Lama pillows. These are BIG and striking but oh, so easy to make. The Dahlia Lama print has a 24" repeat so we decided to use a 24" pillow form to showcase the full design. Find the repeat on the fabric and mark a perfect 24" square using a water-soluble fabric marker. The flower bunch should be perfectly centered within the square. You can use the tiles on the background as a guide for keeping your lines straight. Cut this square out with your rotary cutter & ruler.

dahlia-lama-pillow1

Make the envelope closure by cutting two pieces of fabric at 24" tall by 15" wide. We used Zen Garden for the backing. Hem these back pieces or leave the selvedge edge exposed as we did then layer these onto the front square right sides together, overlapping the back pieces in the middle. We added a strip of bias tape to the edge to give it a touch of flair, but you can do this with piping or just leave it off entirely. Stitch all around. Clip your corners, turn and VOILA!

Here is is in the warm colorway...LOVE IT!

dahlia-lama-pillow3

dahlia-lama-pillow4

Now, how about this sweet patchwork pillow?

patchwork-pillow-front

For this 18" pillow form we cut 16 squares of fabric at 6" x 6" each. If you want to make yours just like ours here is the breakdown by fabric design, clockwise from the top left corner:

Geo Bloom Seafoam: two 6" squares
Orchid Feng Shui Ocean: two 6" squares
Orchid Feng Shui Seafoam: two 6" squares
Building Blocks Seafoam: two 6" squares
Glass Tiles Aqua: two 6" squares
Temple Tiles Ocean: two 6" squares
Temple Tiles Seafoam: two 6" squares
Zen Garden Pear: two 6" squares

Sew these right sides together in rows using a 1/4" seam allowance. We inserted piping in between the horizontal rows before stitching them together.

For the envelope closing we cut two pieces of Orchid Feng Shui Ocean at 18" high by 12" wide and sewed them like we did the above pillows. We also inserted piping on the edges for an extra touch of flair.

Last, but not least, this sweet pillow in yummy candy colors was made using my Hummingbird Patch template from my Pillow Trio sewing pattern. Check it out!

HUGE THANKS to the great folks at FAIRFIELD for contributing all these wonderful pillowforms for our Quilt Market display and to Emily and Emalee for sewing up these beauties. :)

I have many more tutorials coming your way on the blog, so please stay tuned. But before I leave, I also wanted to let you all know that I started a Sanctuary Flickr Group so you all can share your awesome creations with each other. Confession: this was a gift from me to me because I *LOVE* seeing what you all make with my fabric. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
