Rendezvous: Fan Photos

My very first exclusive line for Jo-Ann Fabrics, Rendezvous, launched just last week to rave reviews across all social media. I loved reading all your comments on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Thank you all so much for the support and the love! Even though the fabrics have only been in stores for a few days, we have already seen lots of gorgeous projects made with Rendezvous, so I wanted to share a few here.

Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness Patterns shared these pictures of an upcoming diaper bag pattern. The bag was made by Georgi Sears and the sewing pattern is called the Aragon Bag. This pattern will be out on September 18th, so be sure to check it out. Isn't it fabulous?

Georgi used Vintage Poppies Teal for the main bag and Dark Blue Texture for the straps. And check it out... she lined the bag with my Patio Tile Blue print. I just adore it!!

Modkid Facebook Fan, Tomi Gibson, shared these two pics of her recent creations with Rendezvous. She used Green Chevron Red and Cathedral Windows Multi for her Kyoko Dress (left) and she used Vintage Poppies Teal and Patio Tile Blue for her Josie Dress (right). So cute!!

Marie Belanger Beck also used Vintage Poppies Teal but she paired it up with Dark Gray Texture for her adorable Josie Dress.

OK, I'm sure I am not the only one noticing a trend here. Hmmmm.... you guys really like my Vintage Poppies Teal fabric, eh? :) Well, I am so glad you do! We are quite fond of it too... and of the red version too! Free pattern for the Poppies Apron can be found here.

We listen!

Since the moment we launched our MODKID sewing pattern collection, now nearly two years ago, we have been listening to your feedback, taking notes and planning ways to offer the best possible product out there.

The 3 most frequently asked questions we receive regarding our sewing patterns are:

1. Can you make them in larger sizes? (our first 10 patterns went up to size 7)
2. Can you include the sizing chart on the back page? (these were generally located on page 2)
3. Can you break up the fabric requirements by component/piece? (the fabric requirements were shown as a whole, not broken up by piece)

These were all valid requests and we've made it our purpose to address each and every one of them in all the new patterns we launch but also in new re-prints of popular, now sold-out, patterns.

As you know, our new girls' patterns, Maddie and Penny, do go up to a size 10, which is 3 sizes larger than our first generation of patterns, and we've also designed women's versions of these patterns, Madeline and Penelope (in sizes XS - XL), to satisfy another popular demand. And I should also point out that all new patterns also include detailed sizing charts and fabric requirements on the back page as you requested.

But in addition to the new patterns, we've also reprinted two of our most popular first generation patterns that were currently sold-out, Emma and Frida.





As you see above, the new and improved patterns showcase the latest fabric line on the cover (more on that soon, I promise!) to give them a longer shelf-life and now go up to a size 10... YIPPEE!

The back pages have also received a whole new facelift! Let's take Frida for example...



As you see, the top row of inspiration photos has been updated to show garments made with fabric collections that are currently available in stores (the old version of Frida only showed garments made with Andalucia, which is now retired.) The potty girls now have faces, as opposed to the faceless versions on older patterns. But most importantly, the fabric requirements chart now shows the yardage broken up by piece, just in case you want to make the sleeves, hem band and pocket in a different fabric than the main skirt and bodice. And, last, but not least, the sizing chart is now on the back page and shows US and Euro sizes in addition to the child's height, to cover all bases.

Hope you are pleased with these improvements. As older clothing patterns go into out-of-stock status, we will try to address all your concerns and hopefully launch with a better product every time.

RETAILERS: You can pre-order new Frida and Emma for your store by logging into the wholesale portion of our website. Together with our new Fall 2010 patterns, these will be in stock and ready to ship by the end of October.

Frantic Friday

I was awakened this morning by the sound of Sydney screaming her little head off Daddy, Daddy, Daaaaaaddy! as she pounded on the front door. I didn't panic because this has happened before, just usually not this early. It was 6:45 am and I was enjoying my last few days of sleeping in before the school year begins (I don't ask for much, people!) Sydney gets upset when she wakes up after Jon has already left. Jon works out in the mornings before going to work and sometimes Sydney wakes up before he leaves and they have a few minutes of QT before he takes off. That usually involves Jon playing with her, giving her breakfast and then setting her up to watch a movie so that Sophie and I can sleep in a little bit longer... and I love him for that. But not this morning. Apparently she had just missed him and watched him drive off from the front window, so I spent the first half-hour or so of my day trying to console my frantic 3-year old... waaaaaaaah!

Just to give you a glimpse of Sydney's personality... if you follow me on twitter you have already seen this, but for the rest of you who don't I thought it was worth repeating. This was her a couple of days ago:

Me: Sydney, could you please pick up your dirty dishes.
Sydney: Sorry, we're closed!

She's 3, people, threeeeee! Yup!

But aside from my rude awakening, the rest of my day promises to be just as frantic as the first few minutes. My 2nd strike-offs (a.k.a. restrikes) arrive today. And just like last time, I have a tracking number from Kathy Miller but I promised myself I would not stand like a dork by my door pacing for these all day. Maybe any other day would've been OK, but not today. And that doesn't mean I'm not excited about them. I am. Not like my loss of all bodily functions that occurred last time but still very excited! Can't wait to see the new & improved ANDALUCIA (the way I intended it)... I promise to share some pictures. :)

It just so happens that today I have a frantic day scheduled. Yep, I somehow managed to leave all things for the last minute and now it's all piled up. I have to turn in Sydney's pre-school registration papers as soon as the school opens (which should be in a few minutes) together with a check so large that my hand actually shook as I wrote it. Gulp! Then I have to drive across town to turn in my Gym registration papers because my Free trial membership is just about over and I don't want to go a day without working out. Only 7 days left till the wedding... I can't slack off now! And then I have to drive to the other side of town to register Sophie for the next session of swim lessons which starts in just a couple of days.

Then I have to meet a refrigerator repair man back at the house sometime between noon and 3. Don't you just love that? Jon tried replacing our water filter and just in the motion of him pulling the old one out and inserting the new one, it just decided to stop working altogether. Lovely!

I'm hoping the restrikes will arrive sometime between noon and 3 also so I can actually kill 2 birds with one stone, because at some point today I also need to take Sophie school supply shopping. Yah, loads of fun!

Taking the plunge?

This is not the usual light fare you are accustomed to here on my blog, so brace yourselves. In light of recent events, including the changes that eBay is making to their fee structure and feedback system and a recent video on youtube promoting an eBay boycott during the week of Feb. 18-25, I have forced myself to sit back and reevaluate my business goals.

I have been selling on eBay for over 7 years, but only in the past 2 years have I solely concentrated on selling my children's boutique clothing there. I have had the best, absolute best time doing so and have forged friendships that I intend to keep for a long, long time... not to mention the most wonderful customers anyone could ever ask for.

However, in light of the above-mentioned events, I have been wondering if there is a better way to achieve my goals. If I left eBay and decided to sell my MODKID brand items elsewhere (on my website, on etsy, on another auction site), would my customers follow me or would I be making a huge mistake? I know some of you out there have done it already and I would love to hear your success stories or even of any challenges you have encountered along the way.

Also, I know I briefly mentioned this before, but I will be attending Quilt Market in Portland on May 15th to present a line of fabric designs I have been working on tirelessly for the past few months. At this time last week I was feeling an immense amount of trepidation, but right now I am feeling the opposite... I am filled with excitement and anticipation because I know this is the direction I want to take my business. And I feel extremely lucky to have the support of old and new friends I've met along the way. Some of you may be wondering what's going to become of MODKID if I get a fabric contract at Market. Well, I am hoping to be able to grow my business and offer MODKID designs made exclusively with my own fabrics. I haven't worked out all the details yet, but I know that I want nothing more than to make a living out of creating beautiful clothes for little girls and 'fabric design' was just a natural progression for me... something I feel I can be really great at because of my graphics background.

So, I end this post now with a little "call-to-action" (hee hee... using my old marketing terminology here). I would love to hear honest opinions from buyers and sellers alike regarding the eBay issue and the points I have made above.

Buyers: If your favorite boutique designer(s) left eBay and went to sell their designs elsewhere, would you stay loyal to the designer or would you stay on eBay and find new favorites?

And, sellers: Do you plan on selling on eBay for as long as possible or do you have plans to move your business elsewhere? What are your thoughts regarding the recent changes to fee structure & feedback? Will you be participating in the eBay boycott to take place on Feb. 18 - 25th?

Just because I know these are sensitive issues, I will allow anonymous comments, but please let's keep this discussion civil and friendly. I would love to hear what all you readers out there have to say about this... please help me make a decision regarding the future landing place of MODKID. :)

Next, I wanted to share some sweet pictures I received over the Holidays of the most beautiful customer cuties all decked out in their MODKID. And I feel I need to restate that this is my absolute favorite part of what I do. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE seeing girls dressed in my designs and looking happy and "mod" ;) It somehow gives meaning to all the hard work I put into this little endeavor of mine. So, if any of you would like to share some pics with me, I would be absolutely delighted beyond words. :)

First off, we have one of my favorite customer cuties. This is Abigail and she is sporting a modified version of Copenhagen on the left picture and a modified version of Primavera on the right picture. Isn't she adorable?


Next, we have the gorgeous Ava celebrating Thanksgiving in Las Vegas, of all places, in her Copenhagen top & pants. She looks like she's having a blast, doesn't she?


And last, but definitely not least, is this adorable princess wearing her MODKID Princess dress at Disney World over the Holidays. Her mommy, Jenn, emailed me this sweet message that actually brought tears to my eyes: "I just have to tell you how much WE LOVED and everyone else that saw our girl LOVED your set. The pink print in her skirt actually matched Cinderella's blue print dress. When we went to the Castle for Breakfast and they took her picture it came out amazing! I used the photo on our Christmas cards."

Thanks for bearing with me through this incredibly long post. I just had soooo much to share! I guess that happens when you take a 2 week hiatus from blogging, LOL!

I wanted to end this post with some shots I did of my Sydney in our backyard last weekend. She is looking all posh in her new coat from Talbots Kids that she got for her birthday (courtesy of Uncle Sean & Alicia). :) Oh, and I have been having a blast lately creating my own actions in Photoshop... this one I call "Vintage-MODKID."

PHEW... October's finally OVER!!

This morning I was blessed with an extra hour. I'm sure the rest of the country was perfectly aware that it was daylight savings time, but I had somehow managed to forget. I realized it when I rolled out of bed, still half-asleep, and was shocked to see that Jon was still home. The realization finally struck me: "OHMYGOSH! I have an extra hour! What should I do? Should I go back to bed? An extra hour of sleep would be heavenly! Should I take a shower?" (I usually don't get to until later into the day because my mornings are always so hectic getting the kids up, dressed, fed, etc.) "Or, should I do some work?" I opted for a little bit of everything. I slept (or mostly just closed my eyes & rested) for 20 minutes. Then I took a long, hot shower (AHHHHH!), and finally I came downstairs to check email and started drafting this blog posting before I even got Sophie out of bed. :)

That extra hour this morning was extra special to me because lately it had seemed like ME time was a luxury that I could not afford. There had been NO extra minutes in the day for all of October and I was beginning to go insane...

Hmm... let's see. Let's take a quick trip down memory lane and see what all happened last month: First, we had Sydney's 3rd Birthday. We went to St. Louis that prior weekend, which was FUN but utterly exhausting, since it required a 6-hr. travel time. Next followed a little blog contest I did to celebrate my 100th posting. Again, super fun! That week I prepared my set for LimeVine's WRAPPED UP launch, cleaned the house in preparation for out-of-town visitors and began planning for Sydney's Party. The blog contest ended on Monday, the 15th and Jodi of Ruggi28, was the lucky winner. The launch was on the 16th. Out-of-town guests began to arrive on the 18th. By Saturday, the 20th (the day of the party) I had 5 out-of-town guests and about 30 or so party guests. It was a blast, but exhausting. My mom stayed in town until the following Saturday, the 27th.

The following week, I worked on some new designs, plus some things I had on my to-do list. I designed a cool tee for Jodi, my contest winner, and was so excited with the way it turned out! Jodi, if you are reading this, check out the top that went in the mail to you late last week. I hope you like it!!

I also worked on a custom design for one of my favorite customers. She picked the fabric combo and "designed" this top for her lovely daughter, Abigail. It was a combination of this top and this top from last year's Fall line but with a couple of new twists and I am so pleased with how it turned out! Christy, if you are reading this, your new top will be on its way to you today! :)

Oh, and let's not forget HALLOWEEN! I volunteered at Sophie's kindergarten class that day... helped the kids with some crafts and a costume parade at school. Then went trick-or-treating for a couple of hours with my girls and the neighborhood kids.


To celebrate the end of a crazy, crazy month, I got a haircut! And I decided to do something totally different... It was supposed to be somewhat inspired by Victoria Beckham's do, but since my hair's color/texture is NOTHING like Posh Spice's lovely locks, it kinda turned out like its own thing. But, I like it anyway. What do you think??


Finally, I got around to listing one more thing before all my design launches start again. This cute little dress is for the big girls. I know some of you have girls the same age/size as my Sophie, so if you do, check this out. This is ready-made and ready-to-ship in size 5/6/7. Sophie is currently wearing 6/7s for size reference. First, a wonderful repeat customer of mine, Christy, sent me an email that actually made me blush. Oh my goodness, I am still smiling from ear to ear. It had been a while since I received a picture of a customer cutie wearing one of my original designs. So you can imagine how I squealed with joy when I opened my email this morning to find these amazing pictures from my sweet customer, Stacey. Isn't her little one, Hannah, such a cutie? Hanna is wearing Petit Champignons, a design I created for the Joel Dewberry Indelible launch on eBay. Luckily, Stacey gave me permission to share with you guys.



This is by far the most rewarding part of what I do! :)

My Weekly Post

Yes, when I first started this blog I was updating it every day. Then I think I apologized once for missing 2 days or something, LOL! Now, I'm lucky if I can get in here once a week. Dang! Who knew that 2 kids, 1 husband, school, work, home, cooking, cleaning, driving, sewing & reading email could be so time-consuming?!?

Well, in the midst of all the craziness this past week, I managed to create a little masterpiece. hee hee. No, I don't refer to all my sets in that manner but this one, for some reason, seems a bit special to me. Maybe it's because when I laid eyes on this vintage European fabric, I just didn't know how I could cut into it... (even though I had already cut some small squares out of it to make this last year). Or maybe it's because the fabric itself seemed to have a history, or a presence, of it's own. It came to me as part of my MIL's vintage fabric stash that I inherited after she passed. I'm thinking it was a tablecloth at one point because it was hemmed on all sides and was the right size for a large table.

But regardless, after hours of deliberation, I finally cut into it and this is the end result:



Yes, I know it's just a tease. The auction will be up on Thursday, 09/13, (which also happens to be Jon's birthday) around noon, as part of LimeVine's new "Sumptuous" launch. I will post a link here when it's up.

I also wanted to share a very special resell I spotted today. A sweet customer of mine is reselling my "Firefly" costume from last year. Check out the auction because the costume has some very unique features, sich as light-up wings and silk flower garlands. It is full of sparkle and ready to ship to your 2-year-old. Some little toddler princess is gonna be the talk of the town in this super cute costume this year. :)

Cruisin'

Well, everyone, I am off on vacation in a couple of hours. Stayed up late last night packing and finishing up some last minute work and now I am ready to relax and have fun. We will spend the first 3 days hanging out at my parents' house in Cocoa... probably going to the beach, eating lots of Latin food and catching up with family. Then Jon & I will head out on a Bahamas cruise until Monday! I can't wait!! I will post pictures here when I get back. I am taking my Digital SLR with me on the cruise and leaving Sophie in charge of the point & shoot digital. She is a budding artist & photographer, so we'll see what kind of shots she gets of her time with her cousin & grandparents while Jon & I are away... should be interesting nonetheless! ;)

I didn't get a chance to list any of my Fall 2006 samples as I mentioned in my last post, sorry! I know a few of you were interested and I greatly appreciate it. Thank you to those who emailed me directly to inquire about specific pieces. I will settle up with all of you when I get back. :) Maybe I won't have that much to list after all! hee hee

On July 10th (the day we return), I will be listing my LAST Summer design before I unveil my Fall 2007 line. But this will be a special design... completely original and One Of A Kind (OOAK). I am honored to have been invited to participate in Boutique Encore's launch that starts July 10th. It is a Japanese inspired launch and one rule was that we had to use authentic Japanese fabrics for at least part of the design. Well, I ordered some Chirimen fabrics and waited ... and waited... and waited... then gave up hope... then they showed up and they were exquisite! :) I immediately knew what I was going to make with them! This design will NOT be recreated because I only received enough of this fabric to make this one special dress and the remnants were used to make some super cute Japanese stuffies that are also included in the auction... I will even include the hair accessories, ehem, chopsticks! LOL! The set is made in Sydney's size, so those of you who have purchased my sample sets know what her size is... about a 2T/3T. Straps can be adjusted (made longer or shorter at end of auction), to fit a bigger or smaller child. I will notify you all when it is up! :)

Sweet Abigail

One of my favorite customers just spoiled me rotten this weekend. First she sends me pictures of her sweet daughter, Abigail, in her new "Bistro" set. I was so excited!! But then when I asked permission to feature her here on my blog, she sends me more pictures in some of the other MODKID originals she owns. I had forgotten about some of these because a couple of the separates were custom designed for Abigail, meaning that after the auction ended we worked together to make extra mix & match pieces for the sets she had won, so it was such a treat seeing these on a little girl, since they had never been modeled before! Christy, thank you SO MUCH for making my day! I will share these with the world so they can see what a happy, sweet little girl Abigail is!!



What a great way to leave this blog before going on vacation! I may have mentioned this before, but in case I haven't, my family and I are leaving for a 7-day vacation to Florida this Tuesday, July 3rd. My parents live down there, in Cocoa, so we will be staying with them. Sophie & Sydney will be hanging out with grandma & grandpa while Jon & I take a 4-day/3-night cruise to the Bahamas... WOOHOO!!! This will be a special cruise for us not only because it is the first time in a long, long time that we go anywhere together without kids, but also, the only 2 times I have gone on a cruise I was pregnant, so I was not able to enjoy myself as much as I wanted to. Let's just say that virgin CocoLoco's are not as much fun as the real ones, LOL! And, last time we went I was dying to try the parasailing and the rock-climbing wall... but both of those activities would be way too dangerous for women in my state, so I stood on the sidelines while everyone else enjoyed themselves. I did do some of the more harmless activities, like snorkeling, but my adventurous mind was dying to try the daredevil stuff, LOL! Remember the post where I mentioned that I had gone skydiving & scuba diving? Yep, this is just another one of those things to put on my "Done That!" list! :) So this time I am going ALL OUT!!!! I have always wanted to try parasailing. It looks like so much fun!! I'm THERE!

So, I will say my goodbyes now just in case I don't get a chance to update my blog tomorrow before leaving. I have so much on my to-do list it's not even funny! I really wanted to have a studio sale and clear out all my old samples to make room for my new Fall 2007 collection, but I just don't know. Ebay has been so slow lately. Do you all think I should list all my samples from last year... all the Fall '06 stuff? I have sets in size 24M/2T and some in size 5T/6 that were only worn for modeling. I also have a couple of Spring sets that I could list. Let me know if any of your would be interested in some studio samples... at this point I am not looking to make a profit, just recover my materials cost and move them out so I can make room for all the new stuff...

OK, so maybe if I have time, I might list a few things tomorrow evening and let the auctions run for 7 days so they will end when my trip ends. :) If I do, I will post it here...

It's not often that a customer takes the time to photograph their child in your creations and email you the pictures. That is why I was pleasantly surprised when I got an email yesterday from a sweet customer of mine bearing pictures of her adorable daughter wearing Waterlily, an OOAK 3-piece set I sold on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I think she looks adorable in this set and what a pretty little girl! Not only did this customer of mine give me permission to post pictures on my blog, but she actually wrote "I am an avid reader of your blog, it's one of the few I check in on every day!". WOW! I am speechless! Being fairly new at the blogging thing it just amazes me how many people you can meet and how much joy you can spread just with a little blog entry!
