... not in any particular order. It's a busy, busy morning here on the MODKID front. Lots of stuff happening, lots of stuff to talk about and lots of people to thank.



So I went on a girls' night out last night and saw SATC. **I loved it!** I won't give any spoilers here because I know there a few of you out there who haven't seen it yet, but I'll tell ya that I cried in 3 separate occasions. I wonder if any of you cried during the same spots. That was balanced by a lot of laughter though, so all in all it was a great flick! Oh, and having cosmos with the girls beforehand totally set the mood. :) Thanks so much, Dawn, Lisa, Donna and Kelly! I had a blast!!!

That Darn Meme

I keep trying to dodge it, but it just keeps coming back... like Freddy! And to quote my dear friend Nic, "I've done the 7 Things Meme a jillion times before." But I will indulge you guys one more time only because I came up with a funny idea this morning. In a small group I belong to, we've been chatting about weird things we've eaten (or regularly eat, in some cases!) and so I thought... "OK, I could do that 7 random thing meme about my weird food tastes, since it seems to be so intriguing to most."

So here it goes... Oh, wait, I'm supposed to link to those who have tagged me. OK... let's see... I've been tagged by Toni, Melissa, Michelle and most recently by Clara (boy, after writing it all down like that I all of a sudden feel popular! HA!) And if I missed anyone... so sorry.

OK, so now here it goes... Seven things that I eat regularly -- or have eaten in the past -- that most Americans wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole:

1. Liver, liver paté and liverwurst. I will take a liverwurst (Braunschwiger) sandwich over pretty much any other sandwich in the world. And I LOVE all sorts of patés... chicken liver, goose liver... even duck liver paté. Oh, and turkey gravy isn't good unless it has chunks of the turkey liver floating in it. YUM!

2. Tripe. If you don't know what it is, look it up. No, I don't go out of my way to eat tripe and it's certainly not my favorite texture, but I have eaten it several times as one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes contains tripe and I don't pick it out of my plate... just consume it with the rest. ;)

3. Octopus. It's much yummier than calamari, especially when sautéed in olive oil and lemon. My girls adore it too.

4. Raw Oysters. If they're on the menu, I get them! And they're an aphrodisiac too... wink, wink.

(I could insert all seafood, cooked or raw, that I love here but then this list would well surpass it's 7-item limit)

5. Condensed Milk. Nope, not as an ingredient in cakes and pies. I eat it straight out of the can... with a spoon... like others would eat ice cream or yogurt.

6. Escargot. Again, if you don't know what it is, look it up. And again, not my favorite, but I have been known to eat it several times before just for shock value. LOL!

7. Sardines. OK, I lied... I had to insert one more seafood item on this list because I just love them so much... especially when they come canned in tomato sauce and spices. I love to eat them with Export Sodas.

I swear this list could go on and on, but I will have mercy on you since I know most of you have already thrown up a little in your mouths. OH, and for those of you who are in my group or have had the "weird food" discussion with me before and are wondering why I didn't include "maggots" in this list, well... I didn't actually consume those maggots. They were in my mouth for a split second and I spit them out as soon as I realized it. So, if you guys hadn't vomited yet, that little tidbit of information outta do the trick. ;)

Everything you ever wanted to know
(or didn't) about me

I was recently tagged by the sweet Michelle of the Boutique Buyer's Blog and the lovely Gazza Girls of Ragazza Bella to share 7 useless facts about myself ... some random, some weird. I found this rather amusing because I have been tagged before several times for this same kind of thing. Let's see... in this post I shared 7 random facts, and then I was tagged to share 8 useless facts about myself HERE. Oh, and even going back to my very first post on this dear blog... yep, you guessed it! ... it was a "sharing useless info about myself" kind of post.

So I think, after I get done with this one there will be nothing left to share... you all will know every random, useless and weird thing there is to know about yours truly! Now, these are gonna be very random... I had to make sure not to double up on the previous ones.

1. I prefer COKE over PEPSI. Actually, that is a major understatement. I adore Coke and I think Pepsi is utterly undrinkable.

2. I am on my second (and hopefully last) marriage. Yep, I was married once before Jon, briefly, when I was young and stupid (or younger and stupider) and thankfully, the marriage ended quickly and painlessly and I thank my lucky stars every day that it did not produce any offspring (not even a pet to battle over!) ;)

3. I had induced labor with both of my girls and was fully medicated through the entire process. As a matter of fact, if I had had the option of getting my epidural 9 months earlier at the onset of pregnancy, I would have gladly taken it! LOL! I guess you can say I don't like unnecessary pain. Or maybe I'm just a wimp. hee hee. But regardless, both of my childbirth experiences were painless, fun and enjoyable. :)

4. I have very recently started collecting Pullips dolls. I actually only have one... Papin ... but I adore her! I have not taken any pictures of her yet (that is just a stock photo), but I plan to do so very, very soon! Oh, and I also have a mini Pullip, or I think they like to be called little Pullips, LOL! You can see pictures of here in my Flickr. (is two even considered a collection? probably not)

5. I am a beer and chocolate snob. I prefer the imported brands of both of those over the domestic ones. Belgian ones are my favorite. I absolutely drool over Belgian chocolate! YUM YUM YUM And as for beer, the Belgian brews are far, far superior in taste, smoothness and consistency over any domestic brew I have ever tasted. My favorites are Lindeman's Lambic, Sterkens White Ale and Hoegaarden. OK... now I'm salivating. LOL!

6. I think I may also be a thread & fabric snob. LOL! I only use Gutterman or Mettler thread and lately I have been so infatuated with imported fabrics (esp. the Japanese imports and European... Stenzo, etc. fabrics) that I cannot even look at anything else. UGH! My paypal account is suffering big time. :(

7. I left this one for last because it is the most meaningful one: I have recently started working on some graphics that I hope to sometime in the future turn into textile designs. My friend, Sandi, strongly encouraged me to pursue this a while back and I was hesitant at first, but I have decided to just give it a go. With my graphic design background, I think it will come as a natural progression for me and the worse thing that could happen is that I get turned down, but at least I get a fun trip to Market out of it! ;) Thanks, Sandi, for giving me the push I needed. If all goes well, I'll be seeing you in Portland next May!! :)

OK... PHEW! That was a lot of random stuff, but I tell ya, I had to. After all the similar tags I have done in the past, it was slim pickins'

Double Tagged!

I hadn't been tagged in a while but just recently I was tagged again by Raina and Michelle, so I though, since I am in between launches I would take a few minutes to share some useless facts about myself.

First of all, Raina tagged me to share 8 useless facts about myself...

The Rules:

OK, so... since I'm a bit of a rule-bender, I will do as above with the exception of tagging 8 people. This game has been going around for quite a while so pretty much everyone I know has been tagged already! LOL!

1. I have moved a total of 14 times in my lifetime, spanning 4 different countries and 3 states within the U.S.
   
   
2. I have almost a full head of gray hair but no one knows that because I color it dark brown (my original color) about every 4 weeks. I can tell by looking at my roots just how gray it is and it freaks me out!!!
   
   
3. I have been told repeatedly that I look to be in my early-to-mid 20s (even though I am 36). Obviously, none of those people have seen me 4 weeks after dying my hair! ;)
   
   
4. I have a horrible habit of biting my nails and I even bite my hangnails until they bleed. Yah, I know... GRRROOOOSS! The only thing that keeps me from doing this is a fresh manicure.
   
   
5. I like doing daredevil-ish things to keep me feeling young and alive. I have been skydiving once, scuba diving several times and recently I went parasailing with Jon. However, I have no desire to go bungie jumping.
   
   
6. I changed my major 3 times in college before I settled for Photography. I did get a Minor in Graphic Design too.
   
   
7. I know how to properly construct a pinhole camera and made several of them in college, which I still have as keepsakes.
   
   
8. Even though I sew for my kids or other people's kids almost every day, I have NEVER sewn an article of clothing for myself.

• M -- Meticulous. About my work, that is. I am the kind of person that will take an entire row of stitching out just because it is not perfectly straight. I will also work for hours on a logo design or on editing a set of photographs until they are just perfect. It's maddening (hey, there's another M word! LOL!)
  
  
• A -- Artistic. Art has always been an important part of my life. I knew even as a very small child what I wanted to be when I grew up.
  
  
• R -- Romantic. I believe in love at first sight and when I fall in love, I fall HARD. I am also constantly daydreaming.

My Song?

I was tagged by Chelsea weeks ago (sorry!) and then by Michelle probably weeks ago too and most recently by Dayna to choose a song that best describes me, or my life or my state of mind. And girls, I just want to say to all of you that I was not ignoring your tag at all. It's just that you have no idea how hard this one was for me. I still don't know! LOL!

If you had asked me this question back when I was 16 or 17, my answer would have been real easy. I probably would have said "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen, seeing as I was quite the rebel in my teenage years and hung out with a very "questionable" crowd back then. My mom still cringes when she remembers some of the clothes I used to wear back in high school. Oh, and don't get me started on my hair, my nails, my lipstick... LOL! Well, my life is quite different now. My hair is a normal Loréal shade and my clothes are no longer ripped (on purpose). But this left me still pondering the "My Song" question.

I thought about asking Jon if he could think of a song that best described me, but I knew he'd give me a smart ass answer being that he loves to make fun of all blogging-related matters. He would probably say that the song that best describes me is "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage because he claims that I am always bitching about something and I seem to rather enjoy it. LOL! Well, he's always bitching about my bitching, so there. ;) Then he would probably say that another song that best describes me is "Rich Girl" by Gwen Stefani because I am always dreaming about what I would do "if I had all the money in the world." But as much as I'd love to "clean out Vivienne Westwood in my Galliano gown" I really don't think that I would use my money to "get me four Harajuku girls to inspire me..." NOPE!

So, that still left me with no song. My life is not what it used to be so it is a lot harder to pinpoint something like this. And it's not that I am "complicated" or "multi-faceted"... it's actually quite the opposite. I think my life is actually too simple and normal for there to be a song about it. hee hee. I always had a certain title that sort of "defined" me. Like, I've been the "Goth chick" or the "College Student" or the "Graphic Designer" and whatever I was doing at the time I did it full-force. I threw my whole self into it. Now, it's a bit different because I have two little ones that depend on me and one not-so-little-one that also depends on me quite a bit! LOL! So, I have to be a "mommy" and a "wife" foremost, but I also want to be a "designer" and a "photographer" and a "seamstress" and a "blogger" and a "traveler," and even though I don't always enjoy it, I also have to be a "cook" and a "maid" and a"chauffeur" on a daily basis. So, is there a song about that? If there is, I haven't found it yet.

I didn't want to totally disappoint those who so kindly tagged me, so I will share with you a playlist that I have put together to "inspire" me and "motivate" me when I work or play. This is a playlist of my favorite songs... some are from the 80's, others from the 90's, and a few are more current. I play this on my iTunes at home when I want to sew for hours on end... and I also play it on my iPod when I am out & about driving the kids to their various activities or running errands.

Pura Vida!

I have been tagged yet again by Crystal (so*euro) and Kirsten (winipoo) to tell all about my hometown. So, rather than bore you all with fact after boring fact about my current town, I thought it would be more fun to tell you about the place where I spent my whole childhood... my real hometown and also the inspiration for my current line of children's boutique clothing: Costa Rica.

WHERE IS IT?
Costa Rica (literally "Rich Coast") is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south-southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. (it's that little red one shaped like a crab!)


A PEACEFUL COUNTRY
Costa Rica was the first country in the world to constitutionally abolish its army. Costa Rica is a democratic republic with a strong constitution. It is one of the most stable countries in Latin America. Costa Rica has avoided the violence that has plagued Central America; it is seen as an example of political stability in the region.

VOLCANOES! VOLCANOES! VOLCANOES!
In Costa Rica there are 112 volcanic formations. They belong to the so called Pacific Rim of Fire. Seven of them are considered as active ones. Their activity is connected with fertile soils, which cover the majority of Costa Rica's territory. Their sudden eruptions have caused huge destructions in past years. The highest volcano in Costa Rica is Irazu, the most active is Arenal and Poas has the second widest crater in the world. (diameter 1,5 kilometres).

A SMART BUNCH!
The literacy rate in Costa Rica is of 96% (CIA World Factbook, February 2007), one of the highest in Latin America. Elementary and high schools are found throughout the country in practically every community. Universal public education is guaranteed in the Constitution. Primary education is obligatory, and both preschool and high school are free. There are both state and private universities.

THE WAY WE TALK
Costa Ricans often refer to themselves as tico (masculine) or tica (feminine). The tico ideal is that of a very friendly, helpful, laid back, unhurried, educated and environmentally aware people. Visitors from the United States are often referred to as gringos, which is virtually always congenial in nature. The phrase "Pura Vida" (literally "Pure Life") is a ubiquitous motto in Costa Rica. It encapsulates the pervading ideology of living in peace in a calm, unclustered manner, appreciating a life surrounded by nature and family and friends.

Costa Rican traditions and culture tend to retain a strong degree of Spanish influence. Their spoken accent is rather different than its Central American counterparts. "-ito" or "-ita" are added to many words to make them sound more polite and courteous.

Tagged! Seven Random Things

I have been tagged again! This time by a brand new blogger and old friend of mine, Aida of annabella*designs. I feel like the most popular kid in school all of a sudden. You know... the one that doesn't get picked LAST for sports or for any team-related activity. And this is a brand new feeling for me, because I was quite the DORK in school ... definitely not COOL.

Anyway, I am supposed to share seven random things about myself that most people don't know. Jon's gonna love this one... he claims I already share too much on my blog! LOL!

1. I have been skydiving AND scuba-diving and I am a certified PADI scuba diver. (I haven't done either in a few years though -- it's just too dangerous and when you have kids it puts everything into perspective.)
   
   
2. English is my second language. Spanish is my first and French is my third. (Although it's been so long since I spoke French that I have almost lost it all.)
   
   
3. I love condensed milk so much that I can actually eat it right out of the can ... and I have! (many times!)
   
   
4. When I was 3 years old, I was hospitalized for the croup and I lived in a plastic bubble for a couple of months. I have some very distorted memories of that time.
   
   
5. I have traveled to 21 countries and hope to visit a lot more in my lifetime!
   
   
6. I am deathly allergic to cats and lately have developed an allergy to pretty much all furry animals. :(
   
   
7. I have a terrible case of insomnia (and have had it for years) and often times I lie awake at night dreaming up new designs or running through my to-do list over & over again in my head. It's maddening!

OK. Those are my seven random facts. Now I am supposed to tag 7 people. How do I not tag someone who's already been tagged?? Oh well, I'll give it a shot: Tuesday, Lovelyn, Em, Judy, Michelle, Ash & Jeana.

My good friend Judy (of willarie) has tagged me to show my office right here on my blog! ACK! I guess that means I gotta clear all these papers off my desk, huh?! Well, I needed a good excuse to file and dust, so here it is... my workspace!


Yes, I know. Not very exciting, but that's where I spend an ungodly amount of hours every day! Too many if you ask Jon... and the kids. I work on a Mac and she is like my 3rd child... if I could take her with me everywhere I totally would, but unfortunately she is not portable, so here she stays every day perched on her little silver foot lookin' purdy. Ain't she sweet?

I have all my sewing books and other miscellaneous resource materials on the top shelf...

I keep some office supplies and spare sewing supplies in an old Manila cigar box, compliments of my father in law. I love the rustic look of it... it's got so much character!


I am a huge The Nightmare Before Christmas FREAK, so of course I have to have Jack, Sally & friends here with me at all times.

And last, but not least, some of my most favorite people keep me company and provide loads of inspiration throughout the day: from left to right: Mr. Jack Skellington, Sophia as Cinderella, the fabulous Frida Kahlo (in candle format) and none other than the über-cool Salvador Dali.

A Complaint-Free Day for Patty? Bwa-ha-ha

Ever since I posted about the complaint-free challenge, (what, like 12 hours ago?) I've been trying to see if I can even go 21 minutes without an involuntary whine (forget 21 days, I need to start with baby steps, LOL!). Well, I guess I'm just a natural born whiner, because, this is the way my afternoon & evening went:

1. I was top-stitching some denim with my double needle and it was looking oh, so beautiful, when, all of a sudden, SNAP! The needle broke right into the fabric and pieces went flying everywhere! Of course, I don't keep a supply of those handy, so I had to put the project down until my next trip to the fabric store. First big whine from me... ok, I must start over!
   
   
2. Then, I was waiting impatiently for my postman to come because I knew my beloved FreshCut that I ordered 5 days ago would finally be here today (since it wasn't here yesterday or the day before). Well, the man came and no fabric for me, again. And AGAIN, I whined! UGH! Must start over!
   
   
3. Then, I got all dolled up for a night out with some friends. It was my last chance to have some real grown-up fun since I have to go pick up the kids tomorrow. Well, my friends canceled at the last minute... HUGE whine from me! Ok, I'm starting to think I just can't control it.
   
   
4. Jon felt sorry for me and decided to take me out for sushi. Awww, what a sweetie! He's a keeper. The food was great. The conversation was great. Just a perfect date night with my hubby. As we were leaving the restaurant I discovered it was POURING outside and I had not brought an umbrella. We got soaked and again, I WHINED!
   
   
5. So I am in the car explaining to Jon why I am so disappointed at my whining. I explain the challenge... and how I got tagged today and how I just cannot go 5 minutes without whining and he starts laughing at me because I am whining about how much I whine! LOL!

So, needless to say, I don't think I will be successful at this challenge. I will keep trying but... no promises! ;)

Who's Complaining?

I guess I am, because I have been tagged to stop complaining for 21 days straight! Anyone who knows me is probably thinking "Good Luck with that!" but I actually think I could do it! It's amazing what I can accomplish if I set my mind to it. Daria from Boutique Cafe has tagged me, and I thought this was just a funny little thing among us crazy boutique chicks, but it turns out it's a nationwide movement started by Oprah herself! WHOA! Ok, then!

TAG... I'm it!

My good friend and fellow colleague in the custom boutique community, Sandi (portabellopixie), has tagged me! It's my first time being tagged (well, since 5th grade!) so I'm rather excited. She says, "The rule is it has to be something you have created, and it must be your favorite." Well, that wasn't hard for me. My favorite design is usually my newest design (or whatever I am currently working on). I am currently working on 3 different new sets and none of them are anywhere near showing condition, so I will share with you my current MOST FAVORITE completed set.


I made this about a month ago, but am just now getting around to listing it on eBay. It is titled "Playtime" and it is my favorite design for one simple reason: it is the kind of clothes kids actually want to wear. Most boutique sets out there are really made for mommy to enjoy, not really for the kid. This one has everything a kid likes:
1. It's super comfy (Sydney did not want to take it off after this photo session)
2. It's got every color in the rainbow (as Sophia so cleverly pointed out)
3. It has a fun reversible smock for all of her art projects with lots of pockets to carry all her treasures.
4. AND, the most fun part: it comes with a matching dolly, and you even get to pick out her hair color... how fun is that!?
