I read each and every one of the 96 comments that came in and was pleased to see how many of you already owned a MODKID pattern or a copy of my book and just were hesitant to try PDFs. I love that Holly goes up to a size 10. My oldest daughter doesn't get many handmades anymore since so many patterns stop at size 8. It's a beautiful dress and I'd love to make one for her!

While I have you all here, I also wanted to talk a little about what's been going on in the design front. As some of you might now, I am a licensed designer for Silhouette America, designing shapes to use on their Cameo machine, which die cuts on paper, vinyl, fabric and other surfaces. Well... true story: I had designer's block recently. It happens to the best of us, I've been told, haha. I didn't upload any new shapes to my Silhouette shop for about 2 weeks because I just couldn't come up with anything new to draw. I needed to draw something that just felt... well.. me. Do you know what I mean?

I dug deep and deeper and then I had an A-HA moment. I thought, why not go back to my roots and draw up my favorite things? What are my favorite things?? Well, I seem to have an almost unhealthy obsession with mid-century modern chairs. I own a couple at home and drool every time I see one at a local auction house. So, I drew up some shapes based on my favorite mod chairs...

Then, I looked around my house and found my other obsession... vintage cameras! I own probably 2 or 3 dozen of these beauties and they are sprinkled all over my house and studio. I just adore looking at them...

Finally, I thought, why stop there? Let's draw everything retro and vintage! haha

Wondering what's going on in the fabric front? Well, we are busy getting ready for the International Quilt Market, which this Spring happens to take place in one of my favorite cities in the whole wide world, Portland, OR! This is a special Market for me because I feel I've come full circle. The first Market I ever attended, 5 years ago, was in Portland, and here I am, 5 years later and 12 fabric collections in. I am not ready to completely show you my new fabric collection, but how about a little sneak peek? OK...

Fabric themes - my favorite line are Mezzanine, Flora&Fauna and Heaven&Helsinki - I would love to buy more of such designs. I love especially these designs of you which are tonal (one of my favorite is blossom in lime and dandelions in mustard).
Fabric Colors - more lime, definitely more lime! (I love especially this from Flora&Fauna - your lime fabrics from this collection are the most precious to my heart and I've got special amount in my stash) I love also your mustard (from Flora&Fauna) and amaranth.
Fabric substrates - quilting weight and flannel - I would love to make a blanket having quilting cottons on one side and your flannel at the back!
Sewing patterns - another book would be the best:) I know that it would be hard to publish it in 2013, but we can wait:)))
Tutorials and PDFs - some simple dress for mum and its daughter
Classes, workshops, lectures, events of any kind - I'm international, so I won't give any ideas (I don't want to be dissapointed that I won't take part in it...)
Other products - I love ribbons and I would love to see more of it with your designs.

For fabric themes, first I just want to say that the basics are great - keep expanding on those. I also like flourishes, swirls - prints that can be done in girlie and neutral colorways, but not always with flowers or butterflies.

For colorways, I usually go for aqua, purple, gray, orange. And fabric lines with colorways that focus on just two or three colors.

I mostly use cottons, but also love to find matching minky's for backing and baby items.

For patterns, some more for purses and bags would be great, as well as accessories. And maybe a pattern with baby accessories that coordinate - like boxes, burp cloths, receiving blankets, changing pad, diaper organizer, etc.

I usually purchase quilts and bag patterns in downloadable format - these are the type of patterns I make most and don't often require many pattern pieces.

I'd love to see a bunch of sewers make one design, and see all the variations. Maybe like a blog tour? It's so fun seeing how one pattern looks amazing in so many different fabric combinations and little variations in detail.

Your coordinating ribbon and rickracks are a lot of fun, maybe you could expand on those with embellishments? And have matching thread to your lines? And every time you have a new line, you could offer a free quilt download that showcases all the prints?

You're doing an amazing job, and your designs are beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with in 2013!

I love your fabrics - so bright and colorful. My favorite colors are the cool blues, turquoise, teal, purple... so keep doing what you do! I have wished a couple times to have them in flannels or thin-wale corduroys in addition to the quilting cottons and knits.
As far as sewing patterns - I echo everyone else's requests for more baby and boy stuff.
Downloadable PDFs are great for the ease of printing what I want (and no more), as well as the ability to read the pattern off my iPad while I sew.
I would love to have time to come to a class, workshop, lecture, or any event that would allow me time to sew or craft with like minded folks - especially if you were teaching or working with us! At this point (as a nursing mom) I can't quite plan on whole day/weekend events, but look forward to that again someday.
For other products - your ribbons are great, so keep the embellishments coming (buttons, elastics, lace trims, ric rac). I like to do other kinds of crafting too, so things like papers/cards, washi tape, vinyl or heat transfer material would be fun.
I look forward to seeing what will be created in 2013. Thanks for inviting us to dream with you!

I did want to address a few other questions/comments we received this past week:

• A few of you asked about virtual tours of our studio. Did you know that I did a Skype interview with Monica Lee at Smart Creative Women last year and I actually grabbed my laptop off my desk and took you all on a virtual tour of the studio? Yes, and in that interview you not only get to see the full studio (even the warehouse) and meet my assistants, but also learn about my journey into fabric and pattern design. If you missed it back then, I encourage you to check it out. Here is Part 1, and here is Part 2.
• A few others asked about sewing tutorials, especially tutorials for sewing with knits. I am pleased to announce that we will have a collection of new sewing tutorial videos out this year. I am filming the first of many next week down at the BabyLock headquarters! Can't wait!! But in the meantime, please check out the 5 sewing videos we have on YouTube. Our next few will be more professionally shot and will cover many more techniques, I promise!
• I also saw a few requests for blog tours, where different bloggers sew the same item from a pattern and share their versions. I absolutely LOVE that idea and would love to get one going soon. If you guys have suggestions as to which project you'd like to make or how to go about it specifically, please leave those in the comments section below.
• Some of you asked for paper products (scrapbooking, cards, etc.) and I am so happy to announce that my partnership with Silhouette has led me to make several other contacts in the paper crafting industry and this year I will be launching 1 or maybe 2 paper collections based on my fabric designs. More on that very soon!
• More PDF patterns are in the works as well. In the meantime, please check out our current PDF patterns (yes, I know there are only 2, but we are designing more literally as I type this!) on YCMT, Craftsy and Fat Quarter Shop.
• LECTURES: if you are local to the Central Illinois region, I will be doing a couple of lectures in the coming weeks.
  - Tuesday, January 22nd at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for the Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guild. Lecture will take place at the Bloomington Public Library and will be followed by a Mini-Modkid Store.
  - Saturday, February 23rd at 1:00 p.m. for the Lincoln Quilt Guild. Meeting will be at
  Jefferson St Christian Church in Lincoln, IL and there will also be a Mini-Modkid store there.

So... on to exciting new projects! At Quilt Market, I had an extensive conversation with the amazing Carla Crim (a.k.a. The Scientific Seamstress) and although I had [several times] claimed that we don't do PDF patterns, by the end of our meal, she had me convinced that this was the thing to do (that tricky girl!). This led to a conversation with Kim of YouCanMakeThis.com and now we are excited to announce our first PDF pattern!

This past weekend I had a lecture and book signing at The Fabric Nosherie in St. Louis in celebration of their one year anniversary. Since it is a relatively short drive from our house, I decided to bring the whole Young clan and extend my visit into a family weekend getaway.

Well, little did I know that the girls would actually want to be part of my presentation! This is definitely a first. Here is Shannon, owner of The Nosh, introducing me...

I LOVE the Fair Isle Stripe in Orange! I love it all!!! Looking at this fabric line inspires me to dream up all sorts of girly, ruffly dresses and skirts!!! It is soooo much fun to sew with many different coordinating fabrics! Especially bright fabrics!!!

I've also recently signed a couple of other licensing deals so you'll be seeing a lot more Patty Young on other [non-sewing-related] products in the next few months! Evolution of Lars

(and a book winner!)

I have a super fun project to share with you guys today as we head out to Quilt Market, but first, I need to announce the winner of the Sewing MODKID Style book copy. So, who is this Lars character, you ask? Well, he's nothing less than our Heaven & Helsinki booth mascot! We are so in love with him... we've even joked about buying a crate for him to travel down to Kansas City and putting a leash on him, water bowl, treats, etc.

He started out when I spotted him at our local Neighborhood Thrift while Jon, Emalee and I were shopping for Mid-Century Modern furniture for our booth.

He was made of resin or something, not quite sure, but we all knew he'd be perfect (with a few minor alterations)!

We spray-painted his antlers, hooves and nose.

Then we spray-painted it again and again and again until he had full coverage (boy, that hot pink color is hard to cover!)

Next, the girls took our hundreds of Heaven & Helsinki scraps and Mod Podged him. Oh, the fun they had! I did learn a valuable lesson that day: always put my hair up in a bun when working with Mod Podge! My hair is so long now that even with a ponytail on, I couldn't keep it from dipping into the glue pan and splattering everywhere.... niiiice!

Anyway, after he was completely covered in scraps, we let him dry overnight. The following day, I blinged his eyes... each eye has about 25 rhinestones! Yes, Lars is quite in touch with his feminine side, wouldn't you say?

A couple coats of Polyurethane Spray to make him nice and shiny, and VOILA!

Hello, all! Hope everyone had a very happy Easter! I'm still trying to come down from my chocolate marshmallow high... and that's while still trying to recover from our 9-day trip to FL. Oh, the laundry!

Now, I know a lot of you commented about wanting to see new laminates so you could sew our new Paige pattern as a raincoat, so here's our new announcement...



Yes, the new LUSH Laminates are now in stock at Michael Miller, so retailers, you can order those now. That is our Sun & Surf Tote there on the left, which we are currently using as a swim bag... how perfect it is to hold all those wet items! And of course, our Paige pattern looks adorable as a reversible rain coat... we are so ready for the rainy season!

And since we also heard from lots of you that you are dying to get the new MODKID patterns, I am thrilled to announce that all the patterns arrived at our warehouse last Thursday and pre-orders began shipping right away. They should be arriving at your favorite retailer this week, so go ahead and ask them if they have the new patterns coming. :)

Andddd... we're off!

It's been an insane last few days to say the least. Jon threw me a surprise 40th b-day party on Saturday and I did not suspect at thing. Even the kids kept it well hidden... so much behind-the-scenes planning and scheming! I thought I was coming back to the office to work on my Surtex art boards but when I glanced in the windows there was like 30 or 40 people inside waving and smiling. WOW... it was so cool (and super sweet)! Jon took this pic of me as I drove up... my mouth agape as my friend, Nikki (the crazy camera strap girl) points and screams! haha



Of course, it put me way behind on work so I had to spend all of Mother's Day printing and assembling my boards. But that's OK, like I said last night on Twitter, I love my job and wouldn't trade this craziness for anything in the world.

Vintage Findings for MODKID HQ

We've been working day & night trying to get MODKID HQ all set up, but of course, work keeps getting in the way (not complaining here!). The other day as I was walking around downtown I came across Neighborhood Thrift unloading a truck full of Mid-Century Modern furniture they had acquired that day from an estate sale. I could've fully furnished MODKID HQ (and my home) in these things since I love, love, love Mid-Century style, but I had to be selective. Here are a few things I picked up...

This awesome chair and matching ottoman!!! Oh, I love it so much!



Here's a view from the other side. We also bought that super Mod side table cause it seemed like they all wanted to play together so well. ;)



I picked up this 1950's solid wood frame full-length mirror to use in one of my dressing rooms. Love the simplicity of the frame.



And, yes, this vintage Singer is definitely NOT Mid-Century (more like turn of the century!) but I had to get it because it was $5.00 (yes, FIVE DOLLARS!) I about passed out when I saw the price tag. Anyone know how to find out the year on these things? I've looked everywhere on it. By the way, you will see this beauty pop up in lots of new catalog photography (and in the book!) It makes such an awesome photo prop. :)

Thank you all for the well wishes this past week! Just like everything else, the flu came & went and now we are sitting here enjoying the last few days of Winter vacation. I hope you all had a great New Year's Eve celebration. I was lucky enough to be able to spend it with my 3 most favorite people in the whole wide world, and here are a few shots from our evening...





I had such a fun time last night with these three goofballs that I decided that my New Year's resolution is to spend more quality time with the ones I love. I do love my work and would never feel like myself without it... and let's face it: it pays the bills, so in a round-about way, I am showing my love for my family by working my butt off. But sometimes I get so immersed in it that I forget to pause and enjoy the beauty that's right in front of my eyes. This coming year I would like to find that perfect balance. After all, they're only little once, right?

Here's to a great 2011! CHEERS!!!

I really, really do want to give these away

Thank you all for the wonderful comments regarding Sanctuary. I am thrilled that you love it as much as I do. I apologize that I didn't post the contest winners yesterday as I intended to. We worked all day and night finishing up the booth samples and packing up the truck, but I'm happy to say we got it all done and now we are about to get... on the road again...

i’m so excited that you did this in a shirting weight (i make dresses specifically) and it’ll be so nice to have some softer/lighter options than normal quilting weight for these fun prints!
plus, the 25th is my birthday, so winning would be an extra special surprise :)

Since I hate to blog without visuals, I'll leave you with a last-minute booth sample we sewed up. This is Kyoko in Orchid Feng Shui ... possibly my favorite Kyoko to date, so delicate and sweet! Usually I do this pattern in a myriad of fabric combos but this fabric was just screaming to be the spotlight and I think it suits this design so well!

They grow up so fast!

My little Potty Girls are all grown up and demanding their very own MODKID wardrobe. The new ModGirls are hip, chic, sophisticated and just a tad Beyonce's Single Ladies. Stay tuned for a full MODKID Fall 2010 Pattern Reveal coming up in the next few weeks. Our testers are hard at work testing all versions of all patterns to make sure the sizing is accurate and everything sews up the way it should.



Of course, all of this sewing has generated a huge pile of scraps, so as promised here are the scrap bag contest winners... thank you for all the comments! Random.org picked #46 and #145 out of 153 comments.

Your girls look so cute for their first day back to school! My gals still have a few weeks of summer left and they’re living it up every chance that they can get.
As much as I’ll miss my older two girls during the days when they go back to school I am looking forward to having a quiet and (mostly) tidy house again! I’ll still have two at home to keep me company though so no tears!

Your girls are precious! I have one more year and my daughter(she is also my youngest) will be in kinder too. Sniff. I just got some of your knits to make some samples for a local shop. Girl they are SO HEAVENLY SOFT!!! Love em! I bought a little extra since I have not worked with knits to practice with. So exciting!

The Male Perspective

Greetings and salutations! Today’s post is brought to you by the letter “J”, “J” for Jon. I’m Patty’s DH (Damn, oops I mean Dear Husband in Twitter shorthand) and I’ll be guest blogging for your reading pleasure. Patty is up to her neck in cut up fabric (literally!) as she is busting her butt to get the next set of MODKID patterns done. And lucky for me, I’ve been getting to preview them and trust me, you’re gonna like ‘em!

Let’s get down to business. We randomly selected the lucky winner of last week’s giveaway and without further ado its Elka who was #214:

A rotary cutter that looks like a compass, some grommets (that word makes me think of a character from Sesame Street), a Sun & Surf Tote pattern and 3 yards of Patty Young fabric are going out to Elka and thank you to all who entered and left such great comments. Elka, I would sew up the tote for you myself before sending but since I got a C- in Home Ec Sewing in junior high, I’ll be merciful and let you do the sewing yourself!

Now for some fun stuff. Back a few weeks ago at the conclusion of the WDT, we decided to do some R&R at the end of the trip. We settled on Ruby Falls as this was a favorite childhood destination of Patty’s family. It was a really cool place (and by that I mean cold, it was 50 degrees down there), so I’d like to share some pics with you.

That was fun! Is it time for lunch yet?

The tour guide told us that once we got back to the surface that we were deemed “survivors”. I think the hardest part of surviving was making it through Sydney’s complaints about being hungry for lunch. A tip for all of you: don’t take a 5 year old down a 1000 foot hole without snacks at 11 am. Do so at your own peril! All in all, it was a good time and something for us and the kids to remember.

I have just a couple more small items before I let you get on your way, so hang in there!

Our very popular pattern Frida has just gone into “out of stock” status but will be restocked in a couple of months when the next set of patterns get produced (Hurry up Patty!). We’ll let you know when we have them back in.
